Packing Heat 098: Go, Flow

Go, Flow!

Ever get so deeply into your writing that you stop checking the clock and the word count and really run with your story—then you look up and find that a chunk of time has passed without your awareness, and maybe you've even forgotten to eat? That's flow! I love flow!

I highly recommend Writing in Flow by Susan Perry. It's good for flipping open to random spots and reading, though I've also read it cover-to-cover.

Here's a cool 18-minute video of Mihaly Csikszentmihalyi talking about how he came to study flow, and what factors need to come together to make flow happen at TED talks.

Binaural Beats

I'm also playing with altering my brain waves with binaural beats. If you're interested in experimenting with them, you can find some free samples at the meditation site Jet City Orange

I also have three iPhone apps that generate binaural beats on my iPod touch. My favorite of the three is Brain Wave by Banzai Labs, and it's only two bucks.

Your Assignment

Experiment! Approach something you want to try as an experiment and see if it makes your goal more fun! I recommend multiple writing appointments for a very small word count or short timed writing sprint.
