You can indeed get the word count on a section without splitting the document! Either control-click or right-click (if you don't have a Mighty Mouse!) on the highlighted section and you'll get a whole menu of options, with wordcount at the bottom.

Today was the week where everyone wanted to combine various things I'd done because they liked them both so much. If both things were great, why didn't they work in combination? I think it comes down to intentionality. if something is complete, and it works with the vision of they way you've crafted it, then adding some other new thing to it won't necessarily make it better. Even if the two things, independently, are fabulous!

It seems counterintuitive, but when you think about the creative process, about how you make a series of decisions about what to include and what to discard as you're making art, it makes a little more sense that combinations don't always work.
