Turn Your Page Around

Change Your Format, Change Your Point of View

My method of formatting my work for my self-editing likely grew out of a desire to save paper. But I've found that writing an initial draft one way, then reformatting it in your later edits, is a really good way to spot errors.

Here's my first draft. This is a 400-pixel wide thumbnail; you can click here for a full-sized view.

  • Courier font, 12-point
  • Single Spaced
  • Left Justified
  • Page setup: portrait
  • Double return between paragraphs

Here's how I'll print it out for paper editing. (Full-sized here)

  • Minion Pro 10-point
  • Single spaced
  • Left Justified
  • Indent first line of paragraph .5 inches
  • Page setup: landscape, 2-column

Sometimes a change as small as putting your text in a new font will allow you to spot errors you would have otherwise missed.

Be sure to insert NUMBERS on the bottoms of your pages before you print out! I speak from experience!
