Packing Heat 025: Worldbuilding

Last Assignment

I heard from a reader who said the last assignment was deceptively simple. I agree! I read the beginning of some work-for-hire I did where I had to establish character and setting, and get to the sex within a few hundred words.

Worldbuilding

Every story worldbuilds to some extent, but especially genre fic like SF and fantasy. How much worldbuilding should you do, and how should it relate to the other aspects of your story?

Things I refer to :
 Black Juice by Margo Lanagan
Fantasy and Science Fiction Magazine
Zero Hour

Your Assignment:

Read a short story and think of three things you can say about the storyverse that the author has not explicitly stated, but that you can deduce from other elements of the plot. Think about that the next time you're tempted to infodump, and consider sneaking in the worldbuilding in a more clever and seamless way.
